10 Books with Diverse Characters for Tween Readers (8-12)

I recently attended KidLitCon with some amazing kidlit bloggers from around the country.  The theme was Diversity in Children and YA Books.  The #WeNeedDiverseBooks movement has called attention to this issue.  Hearing from a variety of speakers of color, I had a new appreciation of how critical it is that we have stories with non-white characters that young readers can be inspired by, be connected to, and walk away feeling like “they’re like me.”  I also want this for my white children so they can have a window into the world of people that do not look like them.

But, where to start?

Here are 10 of my favorite books with diverse characters for tween readers shared by conference attendees and speakers
