Bookopolis Summer Reading Mentor Program

Help! My Kid Does NOT Like Reading.

Would your 4th-8th grader benefit from a high-touch, personalized approach to keep them reading this summer?

We know that reading for fun can help students do better academically, increase their EQ, provide a sense of belonging, and expand their perspectives.

However, multiple studies show that time spent reading drops significantly for many kids after age 9—aka the “decline by 9,” as Scholastic researchers call it.

One of the goals of Bookopolis is to help #KeepKidsReading. Our website lets students track their reading, find books they want to read, and practice comprehension through book reviews and recommendations.

I’ve realized this is not enough for some kids. As parents, we hire college counselors, private sports coaches, and music teachers to help our kids develop skills or achieve specific goals. Even if we have the ability or knowledge to teach our children these things, they respond differently (better!) to other adults.

So, this summer, I’m offering a new program to help kids who would not pick up a book without prodding or nagging get reading.

The Bookopolis Summer Reading Mentor Program is designed based on best practices recommended by expert educators, neuroscientists, and social scientists for motivating behavior change and increasing time spent reading, such as:

  • Student choice
  • Progress tracking
  • Accountability check-in from a non-parent (me!)
  • Power of social connections

What’s Included in the Summer Reading Mentor Program

I will work closely with your student to build long-term reading habits and finish at least 3 books this summer.

The program includes:

  1. Three (3) books selected by your student from a personalized recommendation list I will create based on their interests.
  2. Twice a week check-ins with positive reinforcements via text, phone, or Snapchat.
  3. Monthly meetings (June, July, & August) with a small group of students via Zoom or phone to discuss what they read and why reading matters.
  4. Access to Bookopolis digital reading log.
  5. Tips for parents and book-specific prompts to ask about your student’s reading.

Summer Price: $100 – includes 3 books selected by your student

ABOUT YOUR MENTOR – KARI NESS RIEDEL (aka Mayor of Bookopolis)

I have spent the last ten years getting kids to read more. I believe fervently that books change lives. As the founder of Bookopolis, a kids’ book club facilitator, and a kidlit book reviewer, I have developed a unique ability to help young people connect with the right book that helps them see themselves as readers. I have an MBA from Northwestern University and am currently pursuing my Masters in Education for 4th-8th grade English Language Arts at Texas State University. I am a parent of two incredible young men who love to read.
