Many teachers and librarians encourage students to read by setting reading challenges that require students to read a certain number of books across multiple genres during the school year (e.g. Donalyn Miller’s 40 Book Challenge or modifications of this idea.)
Educators and students can now track their Books Read by Genre using the Bookopolis Genre Tracker. This tracking feature encourages accountability and reflection – two important elements of reading motivation.
As a social network for readers (aka Goodreads for Kids), Bookopolis lets student celebrate their reading, share their opinions through book ratings and reviews, and discover new books through peer recommendation and curated lists. In the same way that a restaurant with 100 4.5 star reviews on Yelp is instantly more appealing than one with no reviews, Bookopolis allows elementary and middle school students (and their adults!) to explore over 750,000 reviews written by other young readers to help them figure out what to read next.

How to use the Bookopolis Genre Tracker – Step by Step Screenshots
For Educators – Go to My Dashboard, select your Class. Select VIEW GENRE TRACKER report from right side menu bar.
The Genre Tracker reports allows you to see the Total number of Books Read by Student for a given Date Range.
Note: students must have added the book to their Bookopolis “I Read It” shelf and selected on Genre. Keep scrolling to learn more about how students do this.
Scroll to the right to see the count of books by genre. We currently have 11 genres that can be tracked. If you use different genres, contact us and we’ll add them for you.

Students search for book in the search bar at the top of the page, and click on ADD TO MY BOOKSHELF and select I READ IT shelf. Then, VIEW IN MY BOOKSHELF. Then, WRITE A REVIEW.
Students are encouraged to add a star rating and review.
The Completed Date is connected to the date range options in the Genre Tracker report in your Teacher Dashboard. Students can edit the Completed Date anytime. If they do not pick a date, the default is today’s date.
Students have the option to add tags to the book based on grade level they think it’s good for and topics/themes they observed in the book.
***To use the Genre Tracker, students MUST assign a genre to the book from this dropdown menu. ***(Again, if you want us to add another genre option, contact us.) This is the Genre that will be reflected in the Genre Tracker report in your Teacher Dashboard. Don’t forget to hit SAVE!
And, that’s it! You can combine this with our READING CHALLENGE feature so students earn a special Bookopolis badges for completing their challenge.
Questions or Feedback? We’ll all ears. Our goal is to #KeepKidsReading!
